This post was sitting as a draft and I'm not sure why...It's true that April 6th, 2012 started our Paleo journey. There were some definite slips, falls, and "heck no!'s" thrown in there too. It's currently May 23, 2012 and I have lost 10 pounds and quite a few inches. I feel better and can tell when I eat foods that aren't good for me. June marks the 30-day period where the GF and I are hardcore and don't cheat. Not once. It took some wading into this Paleo life to see if it was for us. Some habits are really hard to break (holy cow I love Coke Zero...and the thought of ice cream, and bread (both, however, were cut out and then when I casually ate them: stomach revolt!). But June is ours because we'll be doing it together. The Whole30 idea is to not even get on a scale for those 30 days and just go solely on how we feel. Just might take them up on that idea. I'm ready to feel (and look!) better! I'm ready to change my life...and have my GF there every step of the way is so sweet and comforting. Wish us luck!
Today, April 6, 2012 marks a really big day:
I started my life as a Paleo follower today. You know, this business. It's all about cutting out grains and dairy and sticking to lean meats, vegetables, and some fruit. The premise being that humans have been around for 200,000 years and the agricultural revolution has only come about in the last 10,000. Our bodies haven't evolved to digest and support all the grains and processed and milled foods that dominate our world today.
I'm 30 years old and this is the first time an alternate eating plan has fully made sense to me. So, I'm 30 and I am also morbidly obese. (How about THAT label being hung around your neck?) I've been fat my whole life and I've always tried to be the champion of the big girls. I'm funny, I'm gracious, I'm smart, and I love to be the center and life of the party. I make fat girls look cool.
But let's be honest: being this heavy ISN'T cool. Yes, I love myself as I am. Yes, I am in an amazing relationship and I am madly in love. But: I'm not healthy. My back always hurts. I can't run up stairs. I limit my activities to ones where I know I have a place to sit down. I move slowly. I'm lazy because being not-lazy requires energy that I just don't have.
I'm TIRED of counting calories. I'm tired of having to log every meal, every snack, every THOUGHT of dessert. It just wears me out. So, enter Paleo: no logging. No calorie counting. Just eat things that are natural to our earth and cut out the super-processed and additives. Oh yeah, no sugar. Fruits are okay...just be moderate. I think this is the plan for me--why? Because no other plans have worked. The counting calories plan worked for a short time, but just didn't sit well with me.
So here I am. Day 1 of a 30-day detox. Detox from grains and sugar and chemicals. Load up on lean meat, lots of veggies and eggs. I'm "allowed" to eat when I'm hungry and not eat when I'm not.
Day 1 info:
Sex: Female
Age: 30
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 277.6 lbs.
Today is a don't-work-until-later day, so I'm home all day with my work-from-home, almost-Paleo girlfriend.
Breakfast: broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and mushroom egg white scramble. We're using up the egg whites we have and will be using real eggs after that. Consensus: delicious! Just sauteed the veggies in olive oil and added the egg whites. A fun addition would have been some salsa and some sort of meat. Was still a little hungry after breakfast and thankfully we decided on lunch shortly after.
Lunch: we went out to lunch (a treat for a workday since I'm home) to a local awesome taco place. We ordered the salsa trio and some guacamole which came out first. Instead of eating the corn tortilla chips, I just used them as a spoon and it was great! I ate lots of salsa and loved every moment of the guac. I also had pork carnita, brisket, and shredded pork tacos. I just used a fork and ate all the meat and veggies out of the middle and left the flour tortillas!
I'm headed to work soon, so no "dinner" time--but I am planning on taking two hard boiled eggs and an avocado with me to eat at my leisure. I haven't had a Coke Zero today, but unsweetened iced tea has helped with breaking that habit.
